Charticle

Pronunciation: chahrt -ti-kuh l
Function: noun
Etymology: chart + article
: more commonly referred to as an infographic, the word charticle is used mostly in the newspaper industry to describe a the use of visual imagery, design elements, and text as a narrative device thought to allow a reader easy access to the information presented.

USA Today is best known for its charticle usage, but Gawker also embraces the term. Another good example would be New York magazine’s Approval Matrix.

In Mia Eatons own words: "The short answer: I'm cataloging neologisms as they're born, and spanking them til they give a healthy cry. *I was instant messaging my friend Charles Michelet, and because of the custom splint on my left hand from a recent injury I accidentally hit specific key-combinations — and the typos triggered random emoticon faces that were pretty funny. I spontaneously apologized for the typoticon and the idea grew from there.

Cotlands - for children impacted by HIV / AIDS

Cotlands is a long-serving South African 'non-profit' agency that continues to meet the ever-changing needs
of children impacted by HIV/AIDS in our country.

South Africa has been identified as the country with the greatest number of HIV/AIDS-infected people in the world.
Recent reports reveal that more than five million South Africans are currently living with the impact of HIV/AIDS,
while some of Cotlands’ programme focus areas
(e.g. Cotlands' Hlabisa Home Base Care project) have estimated infection rates of more than 40% of the total population.

Recycle - Coffins - Recycle

Recycle -

On a very round-about-way I found myself surfing the web for coffins tonight.

It started with a photo i posted of a boat in the V & A docs,
with the most colorful bins for recycling on deck.
We have been handing back all the trees that was chopped to feed
my magazine addiction for a couple of years now
but have only recently started recycling plastic & glass,
so i am always reading about recycling, and what to do and where to do it.
The manster is very into this whole worm farm thing idea, but as yet we
still have to get both the worms and the farm. Manster will have to start
traveling less, i just can't see myself looking after these little creatures.

Coffins -

Anyway back to the subject in the middle.
This got me to these very interesting and somewhat extraordinary sites
on what to do when you leave the current for the ever after.
I suppose it is something you have to think and state before hand
for no other reason than not to hassle the family with the
difficult decision on how to dispose of the old body.

Recycle!

Just a pity that none of these are available in South Africa.
I am yet to find a eco-friendly homegrown product.
Until then i will just have to stick it out and keep on
recycling until i have found some suitable method of disposal.

Re-use and Recycling in South Africa

http://www.goinggreen.co.za/

We've frequently been contacted by people from all over South Africa asking "where can I take my recyclables?" Unfortunately the enthusiasm of first-time recyclers all too frequently wears thin after struggling to find information. Well help is on its way - we've done a bit of investigating to come up with information which will hopefully be of assistance...

You can find links to general information about recycling, as well as links to websites with lists of recycling companies and drop-off centres for recyclables including cans, electronic waste and metals, glass, hazardous waste, paper, plastics and tyres in the Green home and Office: Waste section of the Going Green Links.

Recycling can sometimes be quite an effort, so if you are looking for somebody to help you, you can find various recycling businesses in the Waste & Recycling category of the Going Green Directory. Maybe there is somebody right there in your area. Also take a look at the WWF Be the Hero Recycling Directory for the addresses of various recycling places for paper, cans, plastic, medical waste, cooling and motor oil, cardboard, nylon polyester, builders' waste etc.

Many of you have also contacted us requesting further information about using worms - vermiculture - for dealing with your organic waste (kitchen scraps etc). You can find out more about the fascinating world of worms by exploring the Green Lifesyle: Composting section of the Going Green Links or by searching the Composting category of the Going Green Directory where you will find the contact details of businesses who sell worm farming kits.

In general our first suggestion would be to re-think the way in which you do things and to reduce the amount of waste you create - reduce & re-think, reuse & regenerate, recycle & repair - less clutter in the home also contributes to greater peace of mind:

  • Think about whether you really need a product and how you will deal with its associated waste issues before you buy it
  • Buy goods in bulk or in reusable containers and avoid over-packaged products
  • Buy refills or concentrates
  • Buy fresh unprocessed products - preferably local
  • Reuse plastic bags when shopping or better still - take a more durable non-plastic bag or basket
  • Compost your kitchen scraps or start a worm farm
  • First have a bash at repairing the item you're considering disposing of, and if you can't fix it, consider giving it to someone in need who may have further use for it

Sundays Kilojoules

I have just been made aware (by my good and i confirm good friend Corli and apparently also my self appointed conscience)
that i haven't blogged about this past Sunday's food intake!
Suppose she is right, i can not only blog about the right's, i should also blog about the wrong's
So to set the record straight here is the Sunday's kj's facts.

In my defense a girls gotta have fun sometimes, and we did work very hard rearranging her new living room.

I had:

2 x cuppa's with cream and sugar (yum)
half a pizza
half a bottle of red wine
2 slices french toast with syrup and cheese
another glass of wine
4 (small'ish) home made peanut butter & condense milk sweet

This must be about 12000kj, but you will note that the Monday intake was less than 6000kj.
